How to Detect Volvo Excavator Hydraulic Pump Failure? 4 Critical Signs

If the engine is the heart of construction equipment, the hydraulic pump is the main system circulating blood through its veins. Especially in Volvo excavators (EC series) or loaders (L series), hydraulic pump failures are among the problems that show themselves immediately but are sometimes victims of misdiagnosis.

If you feel that your machine suddenly "stalls" or loses its former power while lifting tons of excavation on the site, there are some golden rules to understand if the problem is in the hydraulic pump.

As Odak İş Makinaları, the experienced address in Ankara Ostim, we have compiled the 4 critical symptoms you need to know to diagnose a hydraulic pump failure early.

1. Performance Drop as the Oil Heats Up (The Clearest Sign)

This is the most classic and absolute sign of a hydraulic pump failure. You arrive at the site in the morning, everything is normal when you first start the machine, and the bucket responses are great. However, after 1-2 hours of operation (when the hydraulic oil heats up), if the machine slows down visibly, stalls while lifting the arm or digging with the bucket, the problem is most likely the pump.

Why Does It Happen? When the shoes, cylinder block, or valve plate inside the pump wear out, cold and thick oil (high viscosity) can tolerate these gaps. However, when the oil heats up and thins, "internal leakage" begins from the worn areas, and the pressure drops.

2. Machine Stalling and Sluggish Functions

If the machine responds reluctantly even though the operator pulls the joystick all the way, you should be careful. Especially when performing two movements at the same time (for example, turning the swing and lifting the arm at the same time), if the machine's RPM drops incredibly and "stalls" as if it is about to stop, it means the hydraulic pump cannot convert the power it receives from the engine into pressure.

3. Abnormal Noises from the Pump (Whining and Grinding)

If you hear a high-pitched whining, groaning, or metal grinding sound coming from the pump area while inside the cabin or next to the machine, alarm bells are ringing. These sounds are usually caused by two reasons:

  • Cavitation: Air entering the system or blockages in the suction line (e.g., a clogged hydraulic filter) cause the pump to run without oil and make noise.

  • Mechanical Wear: It is the beginning of the disintegration of the bearings or pistons inside the pump. In this case, the machine must be stopped immediately to prevent metal shavings (debris) from entering the system.

4. Overheating of Hydraulic Oil

Wear and internal leaks within the pump create excessive friction in the system. This causes the hydraulic oil to heat up much faster and to higher temperatures than normal. If your hydraulic oil cooler (radiator) is clean but the oil is constantly approaching the boiling point, it is highly likely that your pump has lost its efficiency (flow rate).

What to Do in Case of Hydraulic Pump Failure?

If you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms above, continuing to force the machine can cause debris to be pumped into the hydraulic system, increasing the repair cost tenfold.

The Solution is at Odak İş Makinaları! Whether you need original Volvo pumps or OEM (Kawasaki, Rexroth, etc.) main hydraulic pump overhauls and repair kits, you are at the right address.
